Sideyard
Tire Garden - 2008

The sideyard
of the house has been a hard place to work on. It is somewhat Northern,
more NE facing, so most of the year, it is in shade.
Currently, it is in full Sun for the AM.
Here
are photos of the Backyard as it changed to Garden:

Last
year's mulch and beginning garden bed. This was not easy, dealing
with so much shade. |
|
Though
we did have a nice little garden last Summer, I still wasn't
happy with the area. |
Once I decided
to make a tire garden, I got obsessed with finding old tires!
I needed large tires to fit around 2 Heavenly Bamboos, a Rose and
a Pink Ballerina shrub, these are perennials and will create part
of the back line.

tires. Thinking here about how far the tiregarden will expand.
This stayed as is as I found tires along highways and streets
over the course of a few months. |
|
We expanded
the tired out into the brick walk to allow them more Sun time.
Once the outer edge of the tires were situated, I began the
mulching process. |
|
Each tire
was filled with paper materials, then compost. Then straw. Before
planting a seedling, I scooped out the center and filled it
with soil. |

planted. This tire garden is starting with mailnly lettuces
and shade-loving plants. |

Second
tire level was created. Seedlings starting to thrive. |
|
We
created a woodchip walkway along the tire garden, which suppresses
grass growing up along the tires. |
